Law and Human Rights Ministry Encourages Bangka Belitung Tin Craftsmen to Register for KIK

The Law and Human Rights Ministry's Regional Office for the Bangka Belitung Islands Province is encouraging local tin craftsmen to register their tin crafts as Communal Intellectual Property (KIK) to protect their unique creations.
"We hope that the craftsmen of pewter, pinisi boats, accessories, and other [products] made from tin will register their brands, copyrights and so on, so that other regions will not do so in their place," The Law and Human Rights Ministry's Regional Office for Bangka Belitung Islands Legal Services and Human Rights Division Head Fajar Sulaeman stated in PangkalpinangCity on Jun. 25, 2024.
Faisal noted that on top of being the second largest producer of tin ore in the world, Bangka Belitung Islands also produces tin crafts that are unique and have high economic value which other regions do not have.
"It is difficult for ore or tin blocks to be registered as KIK or IG (Geographic Indicator), but processed products that are in the form of goods can be registered with the Law and Human Rights Ministry," he said.
Faisal further explained that tin ore and tin blocks are difficult to or cannot be registered as Bangka Belitung Islands' KIK or IG because they are natural resources which could be obtained in many places. Meanwhile, tin crafts such as pewter, swords, pinisi boats and others have been processed to become something characteristic to the area.
"So far, these tin crafts have been used as souvenirs by local government officials to give to important guests who visit this area," said Faisal.
He hopes that local craftsmen as well as micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) will immediately register their tin craft.
"Do not let this tin craft be taken ownership of [as intellectual property] by other regions, such as the kerupuk typical of this region which are instead recognized as [intellectual property of] entrepreneurs from other regions," added Faisal.
